Strict columns and modular 12-point grids are safe, reliable, and foundational. But if you rely on them too heavily, they can also become incredibly sterile.

Strict columns and modular 12-point grids are safe, reliable, and foundational. But if you rely on them too heavily, they can also become incredibly sterile. I constantly challenge conventional web structures to create digital experiences that feel editorial, tactile, and alive.

Techniques for Intentional Chaos
Asymmetrical Balance: Instead of balancing a large image with an equally large text block, I might balance a massive, full-bleed photograph with a tiny, heavily weighted typographic lockup in the far opposite corner.
Overlapping Elements: Allowing typography to bleed slightly over the edge of a high-resolution image creates depth. It pulls the interface away from looking like a flat PDF and turns it into a layered canvas.
Orphaned Interactive Elements: I occasionally pull primary calls-to-action out of their expected containers, floating them in negative space. This forces the user to pause and engage with the element on a new level.
